Paint my lungs

I asked our new landlords to use no-VOC paint when they repainted our house this week before we move in.  They had no idea what I was talking about, and I'm sure thought I was a crazy person.  No, just high maintenance.

"EPA studies have shown that VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitted from traditional household paint result in your living room having 2 to 5 times more pollutants than the air outside.... health ramifications include: eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, allergic skin reaction, loss of coordination, nausea; damage to liver, kidney, and central nervous system and possibly cancer." (Fresh Squeeze)

After learning that, it seems like a no-brainer to buy no-VOC paint, right?  Wrong.  It costs roughly $38-50 a gallon when a typical gallon of paint costs between $15-$20!!! Multiple that times the size of your wall space and that's a significant dent in your budget.  Why on earth should we have to choose between our health and our pocket book?  If we all start buying it, we can apply the lesson of cost and demand.  Don't want to not paint your lungs with damaging chemicals?  See Greenfeet's list of brands and places to buy no- or low-VOC paint.
